Meet the Maker

As the owner and leatherworker for Flat Heifer Leatherworks, Charley brings a lifetime of crafting and building experience in farming and theatre to the workbench. Growing up on a generational cattle farm in Tennessee, they learned how to handle various tools and put them to good use while maintaining fences and farm buildings. This experience also gave Charley the opportunity to get familiar with the animals whose hides would one day become their passion, even if they didn't know it yet. As an adult, Charley has worked in technical theatre for 17 years, honing their skills with more fine-tuned work in lighting, set and props building, and costuming. All of these experiences prepared Charley to work with a new medium: leather.
As a leatherworker, Charley strives to blend form and function, creating pieces that are meant to be useful and beautiful. Their designs seek to combine the most essential traits of both utility-based items used in hard labor and high-end items created purely for aesthetics' sake. To achieve this high-quality standard, Charley crafts every piece by hand in small batches or as a one-of-a-kind creation.
